For the last 13 years I've worked in commercial finance, helping some of the UK's biggest businesses - including Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Boots and Sainsbury's - turn data into better decisions.

But here's what I kept noticing along the way: the bigger the organisation, the more support they had to make sense of their numbers. A dedicated business partner, a whole finance team, people whose only job was to connect the dots between what the data said and what the business should do next.

Because it's one thing to know your numbers - understanding and interpreting them is a whole other ball game.

And whilst large organisations can afford dedicated support for that, smaller ones often can't justify the cost.

Outside of finance, I'm an athlete and an artist. I've represented Great Britain at Ball Hockey World Championships, coached football in the United States, and spent a lot of time on my own creative work.
